African Economic Outlook 2021

The 2021 edition of the African Economic Outlook focuses on debt resolution, governance, and growth in Africa. Chapter 1 examines Africa’s growth performance and outlook amid the Covid–19 pandemic. It starts by emphasizing on policy options to mitigate the effects of the pandemic in the short, medium, and long terms. It also explores the causes and consequences of Africa’s debt dynamics by showing how the changing structure and composition of debt create vulnerabilities.

Public Banks + Public Water = SDG 6?

The paper reviews the available literature on financing water and sanitation services, arguing that existing sources of investment – private water companies, private banks and official development finance – are simply not happening at the scale or pace required and are unlikely to do so in the near future.

Financing for Sustainable Development Report 2020

The report provides a comprehensive assessment of the state of sustainable finance. It brings together a wide range of expertise and perspectives, putting forward a set of policy recommendations to mobilize financing flows, and align them with economic, social and environmental priorities. The recommendations outlined in the report should assist Member States and all other stakeholders as they work toward fully implementing the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and achieve the SDGs.

Transformative Climate Finance: A new approach for climate finance to achieve low-carbon resilient development in developing countries

This report analyses options to make international public climate finance more transformative. This analysis focuses on the use of climate finance for wider catalysation of overall financing for climate finance in developing countries. The report identifies eight sets of levels to drive. Climate action: project-based investments, financial sector reform, fiscal policies, sectoral policies, trade policy, innovation and technology transfer, carbon markets, and climate intelligence.

Crop Receipts: A New Financial Instrument for Africa

This report (i) provides background and purpose for the proposed African Crop Receipts Initiative; (ii) analyses the international experiences with crop receipts (CRs); (iii) discusses generic entry points for CRs in Africa; (iv) present specific opportunities for CRs in Zambia and Uganda; and (v) presents the study’s main findings and offers recommendations.
