This report presents an overview of the challenges of SPL systems before and in the aftermath of COVID-19, with the main objective to lay the base for directions for policy reforms. The next section presents an overview of the long-standing challenges of the SPL systems in the sub-re gion, how these challenges helped or constrained its capacity to mitigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the emerging challenges for SPL systems in the aftermath.

Antigua and Barbuda Project Profile: Road Infrastructure Rehabilitation

This project will rehabilitate 8.7 km of major road to improve efficiency, resilience, safety and accessibility along the Sir George Walter Highway and Friars Hill Road in Antigua. These roads are used by 75% of the population and serve as primary arteries, linking the capital St. John’s, the airport, and many of the island’s tourism attractions.

Empowering women smallholder farmers through digital microinsurance

At least 43 percent of smallholder farmers in Africa are estimated to be women. However, they typically have limited choice and knowledge of insurance services that can protect them against agricultural and climate-related risks. Since 2021, Pula and ADFI have been working together on closing the agricultural insurance gender gap. Through funding and technical assistance from ADFI, a human-centred design (HCD) research exercise was carried out in Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia between October and November 2021.

2022 CEO Forum of African DFIs

The 2022 CEO Forum of African DFIs was held from November 23 to 25, 2022, at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC), in Gaborone, Botswana. The objectives of the forum were to discuss the challenges of inadequate resources in promoting SDG projects in Africa and to come up with actionable, innovative measures to scale up resource mobilization by DFIs.

The Political Economy of Slum Growth: Evidence from Brazil

Existing explanations for slum growth focus on rural-urban migration and poverty. While these factors are relevant for rapidly urbanizing low-income countries, slum growth is frequent in highly urbanized, middle-income countries in Latin America. This paper provides evidence from Brazil that local government actions can increase slum growth without changes in poverty or immigration.
