North Africa Economic Outlook 2023

In 2022, North African countries struggled with the challenges of rising inflation and growth recovery, which have been exacerbated by external shocks, including the long-lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the spillover effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The region registered moderate economic growth of 4.1 percent in 2022 against 5.4 percent in 2021.

The Africa Initiative has developed and expanded its capacitybuilding activities to ensure transparency and exchange of information (EOI) benefit African countries. In 2022, five African countries reported identifying EUR 76.6 million of additional revenues (tax, interests and penalties) through EOI, the highest amount since the launch of the Africa Initiative in 2014.

India’s Investment Potential in Africa

Africa is a diverse continent and is well endowed with various natural resources. About 30% of the global mineral reserves, 8% of global natural gas, 12% of the world’s oil reserves, 40% of the world’s gold and up to 90% of global chromium and platinum is concentrated in the region.

ECA is pleased to launch this information booklet, titled AfCFTA: What You Need to Know, which asks sometimes highly technical questions about the AfCFTA and attempts to answer them in a language that is accurate but also non-technical and accessible at the same time. The overall objective of this information booklet is to help enhance awareness about the AfCFTA among the business community and the general public.

Using site visits to document the information, the 22 practical case studies and examples were developed across Africa to portray across a diverse set of experiences that address different aspects of applying agricultural financing using a value chain approach.

Crop Receipts: A New Financial Instrument for Africa

This report (i) provides background and purpose for the proposed African Crop Receipts Initiative; (ii) analyses the international experiences with crop receipts (CRs); (iii) discusses generic entry points for CRs in Africa; (iv) present specific opportunities for CRs in Zambia and Uganda; and (v) presents the study’s main findings and offers recommendations.
