Antigua and Barbuda Project Profile: Road Infrastructure Rehabilitation
Year: 2023
Content-Type: Brochure
Description: This project will rehabilitate 8.7 km of major road to improve efficiency, resilience, safety and accessibility along the Sir George Walter Highway and Friars Hill Road in Antigua. These roads are used by 75% of the population and serve as primary arteries, linking the capital St. John's, the airport, and many of the island's tourism attractions. This upgrade will provide a major boost to commercial and economic activity on the island. The project will also strengthen the institutional capacity of the Ministry of Works and Housing by upgrading the materials laboratory; training ministerial staff in pavement design, construction, and maintenance; and helping the Ministry to better integrate social and gender issues in infrastructure projects. This project has been made possible through a grant from the United Kingdom Government under the UK Caribbean Infrastructure Fund (UKCIF), which provides grant funding for climate-resilient infrastructure projects to encourage growth and to support improved livelihoods, poverty reduction and safer conditions for residents. UKCIF is administered by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
